Doha, 7 November, 2026 (Kamran Raja): Qatar has reaffirmed its commitment to ongoing mediation between the United States and Iran, with Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani expressing confidence that diplomatic efforts could help prevent further escalation in the region and lead to an agreement. Speaking on Saturday, Al-Thani said Washington remained willing to pursue a diplomatic solution despite the recent midterm elections, indicating that the US administration’s interest in reaching an agreement with Tehran had not changed. He said significant progress had been made in the negotiations and stressed that the parties should seek a practical settlement rather than wait for a perfect agreement. Meanwhile, Iran’s semi-official Tasnim news agency reported that initial information suggested two missiles had struck Qeshm Island, although no official details were available regarding possible damage. The United States had not announced any attack on Iranian territory. US President Donald Trump said earlier on Saturday that his administration was in contact with representatives from Tehran, adding that discussions with Iran were progressing well. Regional countries have been concerned that Washington could resume military action against Iran following the midterm elections, after Trump held back from launching strikes in the weeks leading up to the vote. Tehran has repeatedly warned that any new attack would be met with retaliatory strikes against US and Israeli targets in neighbouring countries. Iran has also been promoting a seven-day proposal since September, calling on Washington to lift its blockade of Iranian ports, release frozen Iranian assets and approve an Iran-backed arrangement for the Strait of Hormuz, after which the strategic waterway would be reopened. The proposal has so far been rejected by Trump. Separately, the US Central Command (CENTCOM) announced that the Rewards for Justice programme was offering up to $20 million, along with possible relocation, for information related to Iran’s nuclear programme. In a post on the social media platform X, CENTCOM said the reward was intended to encourage individuals with relevant information to come forward.
