Islamabad, 07 May 2026(Kamran Raja):Embassy of Russia in Pakistan commemorated the 81st anniversary of Victory in the Great Patriotic War on May 7, 2026, with a series of solemn and cultural events honoring the sacrifices made during the Second World War.
The celebrations commenced with the traditional “Immortal Regiment” march, led by Russian Chargé d’Affaires Natalia Shmeleva and Russian Defence Attaché Colonel Vadim Fenchenko. The march was attended by the Ambassadors of Belarus, Turkmenistan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan, alongside their family members, embassy officials, members of the Russian community in Pakistan, and citizens from several Central Asian nations.
The “Immortal Regiment” is an annual remembrance campaign held around Victory Day on May 9, during which participants carry portraits of relatives who fought, perished, or contributed to the Soviet victory in the Great Patriotic War. The march symbolizes the preservation of historical memory across generations and pays tribute to the courage, sacrifice, and resilience of those who defended their homeland during World War II.
As part of the commemorative activities, the Russian Embassy School organized a special concert attended by diplomats from Azerbaijan, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan.
In her opening remarks, Natalia Shmeleva stated that Victory Day remains a symbol of courage, unity, and the unparalleled sacrifice of the peoples of the USSR, who endured immense hardship to defeat Nazism. She also criticized attempts to distort historical facts and revive Nazi ideology, reaffirming Russia’s commitment to preserving the memory of the Soviet people’s Great Victory.
One of the most emotional moments of the evening featured children of embassy staff reciting wartime poetry and performing heartfelt musical compositions dedicated to the heroes of the war.
Guests also visited a photo exhibition titled “Saved Europe,” organized by the National Center for Historical Memory under the President of the Russian Federation, showcasing historical moments and sacrifices made during the war.
