PM Shehbaz, UN Reaffirm Commitment to Stronger Partnership

Islamabad, 19 August 2026 (Kamran Raja): The United Nations has reaffirmed its continued commitment to supporting Pakistan’s development and humanitarian agenda.The commitment was expressed by United Nations Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator in Pakistan, Mohamed Yahya, during a farewell call on Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif in Islamabad on Wednesday. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif thanked Mohamed Yahya for his valuable contribution to strengthening Pakistan-UN cooperation during his tenure and appreciated the UN Country Team’s continued support for Pakistan’s development and humanitarian priorities, including climate resilience, sustainable development and disaster response. The Prime Minister also recalled with appreciation the UN’s role in mobilizing international support for Pakistan, particularly during the devastating floods of 2022.Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif congratulated Mohamed Yahya on his appointment as Assistant Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Deputy Emergency Relief Coordinator at the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA).He described the appointment as a fitting recognition of Mohamed Yahya’s experience, dedication and commitment to humanitarian affairs.Both sides reaffirmed their resolve to further strengthen cooperation between Pakistan and the United Nations and advance shared objectives in development and humanitarian assistance.
