BRUSSELS, 13 October, 2026 (Kamran Raja): NATO’s top military commander has warned Russia that the alliance would destroy anything and everything supporting an attack if Moscow were to launch an assault on NATO territory. Speaking at the Warsaw Security Forum, US Air Force General Alexus Grynkewich stressed that NATO is a defensive alliance but said it was prepared to block, blunt and break enemy forces to ensure any attack against its members proved “utterly futile.” His remarks come amid rising tensions between Europe and Russia and continuing concerns among European allies over US President Donald Trump’s commitment to NATO’s mutual defence pact. Trump has recently announced a deal with Russian President Vladimir Putin allowing Russia to supply diesel to global markets and renewed criticism of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. European governments have accused Moscow of intensifying sabotage activities, drone incursions and cyberattacks, while Russia warned last month that it could use nuclear weapons if NATO attempted to cut off its Kaliningrad exclave. Although Grynkewich did not explicitly name Russia, his comments were widely understood as a warning to Moscow. “If someone is foolish enough to attack us, we will fight,” he said, adding that NATO would target not only the forces involved in an initial assault but also anything supporting, sustaining or controlling them. Russian President Vladimir Putin has said that Moscow has no plans to attack any European country and wants peaceful coexistence, while Russia has repeatedly denied involvement in sabotage and other hybrid operations. Grynkewich said he had chosen to speak publicly about NATO’s plans to reassure the alliance’s one billion citizens following recent incidents of sabotage and arson. He also sought to ease concerns about Washington’s commitment to NATO, recalling that Trump had expressed “love” for the alliance at a NATO summit in Ankara in July.
