GREENBELT, 03 September, 2026 (Kamran Raja): A US federal judge has blocked the Trump administration from enforcing a new executive order aimed at limiting birthright citizenship. US District Judge Deborah Boardman issued a preliminary injunction after immigrant rights advocates challenged the order, which was signed by President Donald Trump on August 6 following the Supreme Court’s rejection of his earlier attempt to restrict birthright citizenship. The latest order targeted so-called “birth tourism” and proposed denying citizenship to certain children born in the United States under specific circumstances. Judge Boardman said the new order was almost certainly unconstitutional as applied to the certified class, noting that the Supreme Court had already ruled that children covered by the case are citizens at birth.The ruling bars federal agencies, including the Departments of State and Homeland Security and the Social Security Administration, from taking steps to deny or fail to recognize citizenship for children covered by the lawsuit.
