New York, 14 August 2026(Kamran Raja): Pakistan’s 80th Independence Day was celebrated in New York with a flag-hoisting ceremony organized by the Permanent Mission of Pakistan to the United Nations and the Consulate General of Pakistan, with Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad calling for renewed commitment to the country’s founding ideals, national sovereignty, peace, security and socio-economic development.
The ceremony was held at the Chancery building, where Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, Permanent Representative of Pakistan to the United Nations, hoisted the national flag as the national anthem was played.
Consul General Aamer Ahmad Atozai, Deputy Permanent Representative Ambassador Usman Jadoon, officers and staff members of the Mission and Consulate, and their families attended the ceremony.
Addressing the gathering, Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad paid tribute to Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah, describing him as an extraordinary leader, visionary and statesman who led the struggle for independence and guided the creation of Pakistan.
Reflecting on Pakistan’s journey since August 14, 1947, the Ambassador highlighted the resilience, courage and achievements of the Pakistani people, noting that the country had made significant progress despite facing formidable challenges.
He also paid tribute to Pakistan’s armed forces for their perseverance and valour in safeguarding the country and protecting its people. He particularly highlighted the strength demonstrated in defending Pakistan’s borders during the confrontation with India in May 2025.
Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad also acknowledged the contributions of Pakistanis across the world, including innovators, athletes, artists and women whose achievements continue to bring pride to the country. He particularly appreciated the contributions of Ms. Saima Saleem and Ms. Aleena Majeed at the Permanent Mission of Pakistan to the UN.
He said Pakistan had overcome major structural and economic challenges over the decades and continued to demonstrate resilience in the face of adversity. Referring to Pakistan’s mediatory role in the Iran conflict, he said the country remained committed to promoting peace and stability amid growing international tensions and conflicts.
The Ambassador stressed that Independence Day should also be an occasion for reflection on the responsibilities ahead. He urged Pakistanis to prepare for the challenges and opportunities of the coming decades as the country moves towards its centenary.
He reaffirmed Pakistan’s moral, political and diplomatic support for the people of Jammu and Kashmir and for the freedom and rights of the Palestinian people. He also emphasized the importance of continued efforts to combat terrorism and accelerate economic and development progress.
Calling for national solidarity and collective responsibility, Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad urged Pakistanis around the world to serve as proud representatives of their country.
Addressing children attending the ceremony, he said they represented the future of Pakistan and emphasized the collective responsibility to build a country that would continue to “shine bright forever.”
Consul General Aamer Ahmad Atozai also paid tribute to Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah, Allama Muhammad Iqbal and the leaders and workers of the Pakistan Movement whose sacrifices made independence possible.
He said freedom was both a legacy and a responsibility, emphasizing the continued relevance of Quaid-e-Azam’s principles of Unity, Faith and Discipline.
The Consul General highlighted the resilience and determination of the Pakistani nation to safeguard its sovereignty and national interests while remaining committed to peace, dialogue and diplomacy.
He also paid special tribute to the Pakistani-American community for its significant contributions to the United States and its continued support for Pakistan through remittances, investment, philanthropy, knowledge and expertise. He described the community as an important bridge between Pakistan and the United States.
Aamer Ahmad Atozai called for Independence Day to serve not only as a celebration but also as an opportunity to renew the collective commitment to building a peaceful, prosperous, inclusive and strong Pakistan where the country’s youth can realize their aspirations.
Earlier, Zulifqar Ali, Umar Sheikh and Muhammad Faheem read out the Independence Day messages of the President, Prime Minister and Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister of Pakistan.
Counsellor Jawad Ajmal conducted the proceedings of the ceremony.
The event concluded with a cake-cutting ceremony attended by Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, Consul General Aamer Ahmad Atozai, Deputy Permanent Representative Ambassador Usman Jadoon and children, who joined in celebrating Pakistan’s Independence Day.
