ISLAMABAD, 24 September 2026 (Nosheen): Minister of State for Law and Justice Barrister Aqeel Malik has criticised the proposed Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Police Act, saying the legislation conflicts with federal laws and raises constitutional and legal concerns. Speaking to the media alongside Akhtar Wali Khan, Barrister Aqeel Malik said the proposed legislation had been drafted with political considerations and was aimed at bringing the police force under the control of the provincial government. He said the appointment of Police Service of Pakistan (PSP) officers was the responsibility of the federal government, adding that any attempt to introduce a new practice in this regard would be unconstitutional and unlawful. “The proposed KP Police Act has been politicised,” Malik said, maintaining that the legislation was intended to make the police force subordinate to the provincial government. The minister said the provincial government could not unilaterally alter arrangements concerning the appointment and deployment of PSP officers where federal law applied. Barrister Aqeel Malik warned that the proposed legislation could create a new precedent and stressed that constitutional and legal provisions must be respected.
