Ethiopia Forms New Government as Abiy Ahmed Elected Prime Minister for Another Five-Year Term

Addis Ababa, 6 October, 2026 (Kamran Raja): Ethiopia has formed a new Federal Government following the first regular inaugural session of the 7th House of Peoples’ Representatives in Addis Ababa, where H.E. Dr. Abiy Ahmed was elected Prime Minister for another five-year term. The election followed the 7th General Elections, which were conducted peacefully with more than 54 million registered voters participating. The Prosperity Party secured 438 of the 486 contested seats in the House of Peoples’ Representatives. Voting was held across 1,139 constituencies, including 501 constituencies for the House of Peoples’ Representatives and 638 for regional councils. International observer missions, including those from the African Union and IGAD, endorsed the electoral process as transparent. Addressing the inaugural session, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed said Ethiopia’s election had been tested and refined like gold through fire and had ultimately strengthened the country’s democratic culture despite numerous challenges. He emphasized that winning and losing are natural outcomes of democratic competition, adding that Ethiopia has no losing children, only winners. He stressed that national challenges could be overcome only through unity and collective efforts. The Prime Minister further said Ethiopia’s influential position in East Africa was not based on charity but on its own strength, resilience and popular foundation, reaffirming that the country would continue to play a key role in promoting regional peace and stability. In his felicitation message, Ambassador of Ethiopia to Pakistan H.E. Dr. Oumer H. Oba congratulated Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, the parliamentary leadership and members of the House of Peoples’ Representatives on taking their official oaths for a five-year term. The Ambassador said the formation of the new government reflected the strength of Ethiopia’s democracy and the Ethiopian people’s firm commitment to democratic norms and values. He expressed his wishes for continued peace, prosperity and development in Ethiopia, along with greater national unity and social cohesion.
