ISLAMABAD, 12 October, 2026 (Kamran Raja): The federal government has imposed an emergency and governor’s rule in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa after President Asif Ali Zardari approved the recommendations of the federal cabinet under Articles 232 and 234 of the Constitution of Pakistan. According to a statement issued by the President House, the constitutional provisions relate to the proclamation of an emergency and the imposition of governor’s rule. The decision was taken during an emergency meeting of the federal cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, where members were briefed on the security situation in the province. A statement issued by the Prime Minister’s Office said the cabinet reviewed the situation and expressed concern over what it described as the provincial government’s deliberate disengagement from the fight against terrorism. Given the seriousness of the situation, cabinet members recommended that the prime minister advise the president to exercise his constitutional authority to impose an emergency in the province. Following the announcement, internet disruptions were reported in parts of Peshawar, while sources in the telecommunications sector said mobile network and data services had been slowed or suspended in selected areas of some cities. However, no province-wide internet or mobile data shutdown was reported. Internet monitoring organisation NetBlocks also reported a significant disruption to connectivity in parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Meanwhile, the federal government authorised the deployment of Pakistan Army troops and assets to assist the civil administration. Shipping containers were placed at several locations in Peshawar to block roads, while police personnel were deployed in large numbers as authorities moved to implement the new security and administrative measures.
