Container Ship Sinks Near Strait of Hormuz After Projectile Strike, Another Vessel Reportedly Sinking

ISLAMABAD, 14 October, 2026 (Ghufran): A container ship has sunk near the Strait of Hormuz after being struck by a projectile, while a separate bulk carrier damaged in an earlier attack has also been reported to be sinking, according to maritime security sources. The Singapore-flagged container ship GFS Pride, with a capacity of 2,824 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs), sank in the incident, the sources said. Pakistan’s Hydrographer issued a navigational warning to ships on October 14, reporting that the vessel had sunk and containers were floating in the surrounding waters, cautioning mariners to remain alert. The vessel’s UAE-based manager, GFS Ship Management FZE, was not immediately available for comment. According to data from the International Maritime Organization, the United Nations shipping agency, the sinking marks the second vessel lost since the US-Iran war began on February 28. In a separate incident, the Antigua and Barbuda-flagged bulk carrier Cape Dao was also reported to be sinking near the Strait of Hormuz after being struck by a projectile on September 23. British maritime risk management firm Vanguard said the vessel was reported to be sinking following an unsuccessful rescue operation. The ship’s UAE-based manager, Peonies Shipmanagement FZE, could not immediately be reached for comment. The incidents have raised further concerns over maritime safety and commercial shipping operations in the strategically important Strait of Hormuz.
