Macron Arrives in Riyadh on Surprise Visit to Show Solidarity with Saudi Arabia

RIYADH, 21 October, 2026 (Kamran Raja): French President Emmanuel Macron arrived in Riyadh on an unannounced visit aimed at expressing solidarity with Saudi Arabia as the kingdom faces escalating attacks by Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthi rebels. Macron became the first Western leader to visit Saudi Arabia since the Houthis intensified their attacks this month, sending a strong message of support to France’s oil-rich Gulf ally. According to the French presidency, Macron was scheduled to meet Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, the kingdom’s de facto ruler, to discuss regional security and energy supplies. The visit also aims to demonstrate France’s solidarity with Saudi Arabia in response to Houthi attacks on its territory and to continue efforts to secure and diversify hydrocarbon supplies.

Macron’s visit comes amid growing concerns over the scale of Houthi attacks, which have reportedly disrupted operations at Riyadh airport and forced the postponement of a major investment conference. A threatened maritime blockade has also raised concerns about Saudi oil exports. The French president’s trip is part of a wider tour of Gulf countries aimed at securing oil and diesel supplies and easing rising energy prices in France. The visit follows a weekend of violent protests over the increasing cost of living, putting pressure on the French government to address public concerns. Responding to criticism of his Gulf tour, Macron said he was fulfilling his responsibilities and working to ease tensions surrounding gas prices. He stressed that there should be no sign of nervousness, adding that he remained focused on his duties. Saudi Arabia is seeking stronger Western support as it confronts the growing security threat posed by Houthi attacks.
