KYIV, 24 September, 2026 (Kamran Raja): Russian drone and missile attacks across Ukraine killed at least eight civilians overnight, Ukrainian officials said on Thursday, as diplomatic efforts to end the war continued at the United Nations General Assembly. Ukrainian Interior Minister Ihor Vyhivskyi said six agricultural workers were killed and 12 others wounded in an attack on the northeastern Kharkiv region, while a strike on Kyiv killed a man and a woman and damaged more than 50 civilian sites, including residential buildings, a maternity hospital, post offices and a textile plant. Officials in Odesa also reported heavy bombardment. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy called on the international community to increase economic pressure on Russia and support efforts to end the conflict, while Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov reiterated Moscow’s position that a comprehensive peace agreement was needed rather than a temporary ceasefire. Russia’s Defense Ministry said its forces had targeted arms factories, telecommunications facilities and logistical sites in Kyiv and the Odesa region. The United Nations has warned that civilian casualties in Ukraine have increased significantly, with the UN Human Rights Monitoring Mission reporting that Russian attacks in August killed at least 368 civilians and wounded 2,314 others. Meanwhile, Russian officials reported Ukrainian drone attacks in the Rostov and Krasnodar regions, while Romania and Moldova reported airspace incursions during the latest Russian strikes on Ukraine. Romania said a drone entered its airspace for about four minutes before crashing near a town close to the Ukrainian border, while Moldova reported several airspace incursions and temporarily closed part of its northern airspace. The latest developments come as the war continues to affect regional security, energy and food supplies, with no major breakthrough reported in diplomatic efforts to end the conflict.
