TEHRAN, 31 August 2026 (Ghufran): Yousef Pezeshkian, son of Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, has said that Iran’s survival does not depend on uranium enrichment, stressing that the costs and benefits of pursuing the programme should be carefully considered before making any decision. In an Instagram story, Yousef Pezeshkian said, “Our survival does not depend on enrichment. We won’t die if we don’t enrich uranium.” He clarified that he was not opposed to uranium enrichment and would abide by any decision taken by Iran’s Supreme National Security Council and Supreme Leader. However, he stressed the importance of making decisions after fully understanding their potential consequences. “A rational person weighs the costs and benefits of something before making a decision,” he said. Yousef Pezeshkian also argued that Iran’s nuclear energy programme did not necessarily depend on domestic uranium enrichment, pointing to the fuel supplied by Russia for the Bushehr nuclear power plant. He said the fuel used at the Bushehr plant is currently imported from Russia rather than produced domestically. He further stated that Iran possesses other important technologies that are critical to the country’s security and governance, but said these areas lacked adequate planning and attention.
