ISLAMABAD, 27 August 2026 (Ghufran): Pakistan has rejected reports claiming that Chief of Defence Forces and Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir recently visited Iran as an envoy of US President Donald Trump. Foreign Office spokesperson Tahir Andrabi described the reports as “misleading and factually incorrect,” clarifying that Field Marshal Munir’s visit to Tehran on August 24 was undertaken purely in the context of Pakistan’s ongoing diplomatic efforts to help resolve the US-Iran standoff.The spokesperson said the visit was part of Islamabad’s continuing efforts to facilitate an end to the conflict and support renewed efforts to reopen the Strait of Hormuz.During his visit, Field Marshal Munir held meetings with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, the Iranian Supreme Leader’s representative on the Supreme National Security Council Mohsen Rezaei, Parliament Speaker Bagher Ghalibaf, Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and Interior Minister Eskandar Momeni.

According to the Foreign Office, discussions focused on regional de-escalation, breaking the military stalemate and exploring a negotiated settlement to restore peace and stability in the region.The sides also exchanged views on regional peace and ways to resolve outstanding disputes through dialogue and negotiations. Tahir Andrabi said Pakistan remained engaged with brotherly countries in sincere and coordinated efforts to help resolve the crisis in the Middle East and the Gulf, particularly the standoff between the United States and Iran. He emphasised that Field Marshal Munir’s visit underscored Pakistan’s constructive role in bridging differences between Washington and Tehran. The spokesperson said the Iranian leadership also appreciated Pakistan’s efforts aimed at promoting de-escalation and regional peace. Pakistan has continued to play a mediatory role between Iran and the United States, conveying messages between the two sides and supporting diplomatic efforts aimed at reducing tensions and finding a negotiated solution to the conflict.Tahir Andrabi reiterated that Pakistan’s engagement was aimed at promoting dialogue, de-escalation and lasting peace in the region.
