Islamabad, 26 August 2026(Ghufran): Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Senator Mohammad Ishaq Dar met with Commonwealth Secretary-General Shirley Botchwey at Marlborough House in London, where they discussed strengthening Pakistan’s engagement with the Commonwealth and advancing cooperation in key areas of mutual interest.
Reaffirming Pakistan’s strong commitment to the Commonwealth as a founding member, the Deputy Prime Minister/Foreign Minister underscored Pakistan’s support for Secretary-General Botchwey’s vision and efforts to further strengthen the Organisation.
Senator Ishaq Dar reiterated Pakistan’s commitment to the Commonwealth’s priorities, particularly youth development, climate resilience and economic development. He also highlighted the importance of promoting intra-Commonwealth trade through institutionalised cooperation within the banking sector.
Highlighting Pakistan’s experience and expertise in climate mitigation and disaster management, the Deputy Prime Minister/Foreign Minister renewed Pakistan’s offer to host the Commonwealth Disaster Resilience Hub at the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) in Islamabad.
Secretary-General Shirley Botchwey welcomed Pakistan’s offer and expressed the Secretariat’s keen interest in working with Pakistan to enhance disaster preparedness and resilience capabilities among Commonwealth member states.
The two leaders also agreed to further strengthen cooperation on youth development and enhance youth-related activities across the Commonwealth under Pakistan’s co-chairmanship of the Commonwealth Youth Ministers Meeting (CYMM), with the aim of creating greater opportunities and benefits for young people across member states.
Senator Ishaq Dar also briefed the Commonwealth Secretary-General on recent developments in the Middle East, including Pakistan’s role in facilitating peace efforts between the United States and Iran.
Secretary-General Botchwey felicitated Pakistan, particularly Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar, for his sustained efforts and mediation between the United States and Iran. She expressed appreciation for Pakistan’s contribution towards averting a destructive conflict and promoting peace and stability in the region.
