BEIJING, 24 August, 2026 (Web Desk): China has strongly reacted to the United States’ indication of imposing sanctions, warning that Beijing will take all necessary measures to safeguard its legitimate rights and interests. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian, speaking at a media briefing, said sanctions and pressure tactics do not help resolve disputes. He urged all parties to exercise restraint and avoid actions that could further escalate tensions or undermine global economic growth and financial stability. Lin said China is closely monitoring the tense situation in the region and will take necessary measures whenever required to protect its legitimate rights and interests. Without directly naming the United States, the Chinese spokesperson said sanctions and pressure-based strategies could aggravate tensions rather than resolve problems. He stressed that disputes should be addressed through dialogue and diplomatic means. China’s statement came after US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent described potential new sanctions against Iran as extremely stringent and warned that countries maintaining trade ties with Tehran could also face sanctions. Bessent had particularly urged China to join the United States in economically isolating Iran. China remains one of the largest buyers of Iranian oil and a major source of revenue for Tehran. Despite the US blockade of Iranian shipping in the Strait of Hormuz, Iranian oil deliveries to China averaged around 534,000 barrels per day in August. In July, China imported around 823,000 barrels of Iranian oil per day. However, shipments declined in August amid tighter restrictions and escalating tensions in the region.Despite the decline, China continues to be a key buyer of Iranian oil and remains an important source of revenue for Iran. Russia is also among the major buyers of Iranian oil.
