Islamabad , 12 August 2026(Kamran Raja): Chairman Senate Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani has emphasized that the health and well-being of mothers and children are fundamental to Pakistan’s sustainable development, stressing that investment in maternal, newborn and child healthcare is an investment in the country’s human capital and future.
Addressing the launch ceremony of the National Maternal, Newborn and Child Health Social and Behaviour Change Communication Campaign as Chief Guest, the Chairman congratulated the Ministry of National Health Services, Regulations and Coordination and UNICEF Pakistan on the initiative and appreciated the contributions of development partners, healthcare professionals, academia and civil society.
Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani said healthy mothers and children form the foundation of strong families, productive communities and a resilient Pakistan. He noted that the country has made progress in improving key health indicators, with infant mortality declining to 47 deaths per 1,000 live births and the maternal mortality ratio improving to 186 deaths per 100,000 live births.
However, he observed that significant challenges remain in ensuring timely, affordable and quality healthcare services for mothers and newborns, particularly in remote and underserved communities.
Highlighting the newly launched campaign, the Chairman said it focuses on three simple yet potentially life-saving behaviours: timely antenatal care, skilled birth attendance and essential newborn care.
“The right information, delivered at the right time, can save lives,” he said, emphasizing the importance of providing families with accurate and accessible health information.
The Chairman stressed that awareness campaigns must be accompanied by quality healthcare services, trained health workers, effective referral mechanisms and affordable treatment facilities. He said a comprehensive approach was necessary to reduce preventable maternal and newborn deaths and improve health outcomes across the country.
He also highlighted the importance of programmes such as the Benazir Nashonuma Programme, particularly in supporting pregnant and lactating women and children during the critical first 1,000 days of life.
Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani underscored the role of Parliament in strengthening policies, legislation and oversight mechanisms related to maternal and child healthcare. He called for particular attention to women and children living in remote and underserved areas, as well as those affected by poverty, displacement and climate-related emergencies.
The Chairman appreciated UNICEF Pakistan for its continued partnership and technical assistance in advancing maternal, newborn and child health initiatives in Pakistan. He called for stronger coordination among government institutions, development partners, healthcare professionals, academia and civil society to achieve sustainable improvements in healthcare delivery.
“When we protect our mothers and give our children a healthy start, we invest in the health, strength and future of Pakistan,” the Chairman said.
The ceremony was attended by Federal Minister for National Health Services, Regulations and Coordination Syed Mustafa Kamal, UNICEF Representative in Pakistan Ms. Pernille Ironside, senior government officials, development partners, healthcare professionals, academics and representatives of civil society.
The launch of the national communication campaign marks an important step towards increasing public awareness about essential maternal, newborn and child health practices and encouraging families to adopt behaviours that can help save lives and contribute to a healthier and more resilient Pakistan.
