London, 20 October, 2026 (Nosheen): Actor and filmmaker Jesse Eisenberg and Oscar-winning actress Julianne Moore brought the 70th London Film Festival to a close with their musical comedy The Debut, which explores the search for purpose, personal fulfilment and a sense of community. Eisenberg, who wrote and directed the film, said he had written the lead role specifically with Moore in mind, describing her as “the greatest actress in the world.” Moore plays Mona, a shy New Jersey housewife who finds a new sense of purpose and belonging after securing a role in a community theatre musical. Moore said the character’s journey reflects how pursuing something missing in life can ultimately lead people towards self-discovery and meaningful connections with others. The film features seven original songs written by Eisenberg for a fictional 1990s-inspired musical titled Nosy Neighbours, featuring a cast that includes Halle Bailey, known for her role in The Little Mermaid. Paul Giamatti plays Jerry, the theatre director who struggles with Mona’s early difficulties on stage as she adopts an increasingly intense method-acting approach. Eisenberg said Moore’s distinctive interpretation of Mona allowed him to create an unconventional film that was not bound by realism. Drawing on his own childhood experiences in community theatre, the filmmaker said the story reflects the sense of family, home and belonging he discovered through theatrical performances. Patrick Fabian, who plays Mona’s husband, highlighted the importance of theatre in bringing people together in person, particularly at a time when many remain absorbed in their screens. While The Debut closed the festival, Ukrainian filmmaker Sergei Loznitsa’s Imperium won Best Film in the Official Competition.
