Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif Chairs High-Level Meeting on Food Security and Fertilizer Stock Situation

Islamabad, May 12, 2026(Kamran Raja): Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif on Tuesday chaired an important meeting on the country’s food security and the current status of fertilizer reserves, directing authorities to ensure the timely and uninterrupted supply of fertilizer to farmers under all circumstances. The Prime Minister emphasized that in view of potential disruptions in fertilizer supply chains from Gulf countries, contingency planning should be prepared for alternative procurement from Central Asian states. He further instructed relevant authorities to ensure sufficient fertilizer stocks for both the Kharif and Rabi cropping seasons. Calling food security a top national priority, the Prime Minister directed accelerated work on proposals to establish new fertilizer plants in order to enhance domestic production capacity. He also ordered continuous monitoring of fertilizer distribution by concerned ministries and institutions.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif stressed strict action against artificial shortages and hoarding, warning that any attempt to manipulate fertilizer availability would not be tolerated. During the briefing, officials informed the meeting that gas supply to fertilizer manufacturing plants is being maintained uninterrupted to support domestic production in line with national requirements. It was also noted that adequate fertilizer stocks are currently available for the upcoming Kharif season. The meeting was attended by Federal Ministers Rana Tanveer Hussain, Ahsan Iqbal, Ali Pervaiz Malik, Minister of State Bilal Azhar Kayani, Special Assistant Haroon Akhtar, and senior government officials.
