Yemen War Escalation Displaces More Than 184,000 People

United Nations, 6 October, 2026 (Nosheen): Intense fighting between government forces and Houthi rebels along Yemen’s southwestern coast has forced more than 184,000 people to flee their homes since the beginning of August, with most displacement recorded since early September, according to the International Organization for Migration (IOM). In the week ending October 3 alone, nearly 21,800 people were displaced at least once, marking a 26 percent increase from the previous week, while another 6,474 people were displaced on October 4. The displaced population is in urgent need of food, shelter and other basic humanitarian assistance. IOM Director General Amy Pope warned that the intensifying conflict was pushing more people into repeated displacement and called on the international community to ensure humanitarian access. An IOM assessment at three displacement sites in Ma’rib found that the lack of safe shelter was the most pressing concern, with some families sleeping outdoors and facing increased exposure to violence and airstrikes. The agency also reported shortages of adequate sanitation facilities, particularly affecting women and girls. Around 45 percent of assessed households had previously been displaced and had lost assets and livelihoods, increasing their vulnerability to harmful coping mechanisms, including child labour. Meanwhile, the World Health Organization reported more than 5,100 casualties since August 6, including 959 deaths, while cholera cases have tripled and measles continues to spread. The United Nations World Food Programme welcomed the release of one of its staff members who had been arbitrarily detained in Yemen and called for the release of the remaining detained UN and humanitarian personnel. UN Deputy Spokesperson Farhan Haq said the United Nations would continue pursuing all possible avenues, including engagement with the Houthi de facto authorities, to secure the immediate and safe release of all detained personnel.
