Islamabad, 3 November, 2026 (Kamran Raja): Two police personnel were martyred and another sustained injuries when unidentified armed assailants attacked a polio vaccination team in Mohmand district of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa on Tuesday. According to District Police Officer Raza Muhammad Khan, the incident took place in the Tamanzai area within the jurisdiction of Pandiali Police Station during an ongoing anti-polio campaign. The martyred policemen were identified as Zahoor and Arabi, while the injured officer was named Sabir. The DPO said that one suspected attacker was also injured in the exchange of fire, while a search operation was launched to arrest those involved in the attack. President Asif Ali Zardari strongly condemned the incident and expressed deep sorrow over the martyrdom of the police personnel. He paid tribute to their bravery, dedication and services to the nation, saying that targeting security personnel protecting children during the national anti-polio campaign was highly regrettable and condemnable. The president extended heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and prayed for the speedy recovery of the injured policeman, adding that the sacrifices of personnel performing their national duty would never be forgotten. Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi also condemned the attack and paid tribute to the martyred officers. He expressed sympathy with the families and said that policemen deployed to protect polio workers were contributing to a healthy future for the country. Naqvi termed the attack unacceptable and stressed that those responsible should not be shown any leniency. The incident comes amid security concerns surrounding the ongoing anti-polio campaign, as four polio workers were reportedly abducted in Tank district, while two members of a vaccination team kidnapped in Lower South Waziristan were later released. A special anti-polio campaign began on November 2 in 97 selected districts across the country and will continue until November 8. According to the National Emergency Operations Centre, Pakistan has also reported another polio case this year in Khyber district, involving a 13-month-old girl from Bara tehsil, highlighting the continued need to protect vaccination teams and ensure children receive life-saving polio drops.
