KARACHI, 11 September 2026 (Kamran Raja): The Sindh Assembly on Friday approved a resolution extending the deployment and powers of Pakistan Rangers in the province for another year, citing continuing security challenges and the need to support the civil administration in maintaining law and order. Under the resolution, the deployment of Rangers in Sindh has been extended from July 20, 2026, to July 19, 2027. The resolution stated that the paramilitary force would continue assisting the provincial civil administration in maintaining peace and security, with its presence considered necessary in view of the prevailing law and order situation. The extension has been approved under Article 147 of the Constitution, which provides a constitutional framework for entrusting certain functions to another government under prescribed conditions. According to the resolution, Rangers operations have contributed to a reduction in targeted killings and street crime in Sindh. However, it noted that activities of proscribed organisations and the continued presence of absconding suspects remain security concerns, making the deployment necessary for protecting public peace and the lives and property of citizens. The resolution also highlighted the Rangers’ role in intelligence-based operations conducted in coordination with the Sindh Police against criminal and security threats. Rangers have played a significant role in security operations in Karachi and other parts of Sindh, working with police and other law-enforcement agencies against terrorism, organised crime and other serious security threats. The latest extension will ensure continuity of the Rangers’ security role across the province as authorities maintain that threats from militant organisations and wanted suspects persist despite improvements in some crime indicators.
