RIYADH, 12 October, 2026 (Ghufran): Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan bin Abdullah held a telephone conversation with his Iranian counterpart, Abbas Araghchi, to discuss the recent escalation in the region and efforts to address the deteriorating security situation. The discussion comes amid a series of attacks attributed to Yemen’s Houthi movement targeting Saudi Arabia. Saudi authorities reported that one person was killed and nearly a dozen others were injured in an attack on Riyadh’s international airport on Sunday. The incident followed a strike claimed by the Houthis a day earlier that reportedly killed 13 people and injured more than 300. According to Saudi authorities, an unidentified projectile targeted Terminal 4 of King Khalid International Airport, triggering a fire and injuring 11 people in addition to the fatality. Saudi-led coalition forces in Yemen also said the kingdom’s air defences intercepted a cruise missile near King Khalid International Airport, while a drone was intercepted and destroyed in the Eastern Province. A ballistic missile launched towards Khamis Mushait was also intercepted, according to the coalition. Saudi Civil Defense issued emergency alerts in Abha early Monday, later confirming that the danger had passed. The attacks have raised concerns about Saudi Arabia’s air defence capabilities as the kingdom continues its military campaign against the Houthis, who are engaged in a ground conflict in Yemen against the Saudi-backed Yemeni government. Footage broadcast by Saudi state television of Saturday’s attack showed religious pilgrims gathered at an airport gate preparing to travel to Islam’s two holiest sites when a bright flash triggered panic among those present. Parts of the airport roof also appeared to cave in. The airport was subsequently closed following the attack, described in the report as the deadliest in Saudi Arabia in more than a decade. The telephone conversation between the Saudi and Iranian foreign ministers comes at a critical time, as regional tensions intensify and diplomatic efforts to contain the escalation continue.
