KYIV, 20 August 2026 (Kamran Raja): Russia launched a massive overnight missile and drone barrage against Kyiv and the surrounding region, killing at least 16 people and injuring around 40 others, Ukrainian officials said Thursday. The attack continued for several hours and involved ballistic and cruise missiles as well as jet-powered drones, placing further pressure on Ukraine’s air defence systems.Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said the attack struck 28 locations across the country and described it as a massive assault aimed at causing extensive damage to civilian infrastructure. Emergency services reported that 15 people were killed in Kyiv, while another person died in the wider Kyiv region. The strikes damaged around 30 apartment buildings, a school, a children’s hospital and a kindergarten in several districts of the capital.More than 38,000 people, including over 2,000 children, sought shelter in Kyiv’s subway stations during the overnight attack.Ukrainian officials said Russia’s intensified missile campaign has placed additional pressure on the country’s air defences amid shortages of US-made Patriot interceptors, which are among Ukraine’s most effective systems against ballistic missiles.
The Russian Defence Ministry said its forces struck a Kyiv industrial facility producing components for cruise missiles, as well as sites involved in drone production and storage, an ammunition depot and a logistics centre. Meanwhile, Ukraine continued its long-range drone campaign against targets inside Russia. Ukrainian authorities said strikes hit an oil refinery in Nizhnekamsk in Russia’s Tatarstan region and the Tamanneftegaz oil terminal in the Krasnodar region, with fires reported at both locations. Russia’s Defence Ministry claimed its air defences had shot down 726 Ukrainian drones overnight over several Russian regions, annexed Crimea and the Black and Azov seas. The latest escalation also raised concerns in neighbouring European countries. Poland activated military aviation operations, air defence systems and radar reconnaissance, while Polish and other NATO aircraft monitored the country’s airspace. Romania also reported a drone crash near the Ukrainian border and deployed fighter jets to monitor air targets. Moldova’s Defence Ministry said its airspace had also been breached by at least one drone. The latest strikes came as Russia and Ukraine continued their prolonged conflict, with both sides increasingly relying on drones and missiles while fighting remains intense along the approximately 1,250-kilometre front line.
