Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif Holds Wide-Ranging Talks with Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim in Putrajaya

Putrajaya, 6 October 2025(Kamran Raja): Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif, who is currently on an official visit to Malaysia, met with the Prime Minister of Malaysia, His Excellency Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim, at Perdana Putra in Putrajaya today. Upon arrival, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif was accorded a warm official welcome, followed by a restricted meeting between the two leaders and subsequent delegation-level talks under their leadership. The Prime Minister thanked his Malaysian counterpart for the exceptionally warm welcome and gracious hospitality extended to him and his delegation. During their highly constructive and productive discussions, the two leaders expressed satisfaction over the steady progress in bilateral cooperation since Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s visit to Pakistan in October 2024. Both leaders held a comprehensive exchange of views on the full range of Pakistan–Malaysia relations and reaffirmed their shared commitment to further deepen cooperation, particularly in trade and economic partnership. They agreed to explore new avenues for collaboration and joint ventures in key sectors including information technology and telecommunications, the halal industry, automotive, connectivity, green energy, electrical and electronic manufacturing, tourism, higher education, climate change, and agriculture. Both sides also agreed to enhance the import quota of halal meat exports from Pakistan to Malaysia to USD 200 million and expressed satisfaction that rice exports from Pakistan had already exceeded the existing quota.

The two leaders exchanged views on major regional and global developments, including the situation in the Middle East. The Malaysian Prime Minister commended Pakistan’s constructive role in ongoing peace efforts in Palestine, including under the recent initiative of President Donald Trump. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif underscored the importance of enhanced cooperation between Pakistan and Malaysia at multilateral forums such as the United Nations (UN) and the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), particularly in addressing challenges faced by the Islamic world. The Prime Minister reiterated Pakistan’s principled stance on the Jammu and Kashmir dispute and expressed gratitude to Malaysia for its consistent support for a peaceful settlement in accordance with UN Security Council resolutions.

Both leaders also discussed ways to further strengthen Pakistan–ASEAN engagement. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif congratulated Malaysia on assuming the ASEAN Chairmanship and thanked Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim for reaffirming Malaysia’s support for Pakistan’s bid to become a Full Dialogue Partner of ASEAN. Following the talks, both leaders witnessed the signing of several Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) between Pakistan and Malaysia in areas including the training of diplomats, tourism, halal certification, higher education, combating and preventing corruption, and small and medium enterprises. On the occasion, the two Prime Ministers jointly launched the Urdu translation of Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s renowned work SCRIPT, which encapsulates his vision and values on leadership. Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim also hosted a special luncheon in honour of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and his delegation.
