ISLAMABAD, 10 October, 2026 (Nosheen): Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has convened a high-level meeting to review the security situation in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, with the possible imposition of governor’s rule or an emergency expected to be among the options under consideration. According to sources, the meeting will be held at the Prime Minister’s House and attended by key federal ministers and senior officials from the Ministry of Interior, who are expected to brief participants on the prevailing security situation in the province. The meeting will review public safety, law and order, and various constitutional options, including the imposition of an emergency and governor’s rule. Sources said a decision regarding the possible imposition of an emergency could emerge from the meeting. If the proposal is approved, it will be placed before the federal cabinet for consideration, and the prime minister may convene a cabinet meeting to discuss the matter. Earlier, sources indicated that a proposal was under consideration to impose an emergency in 12 districts, including the merged districts of the former Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA). Other proposals reportedly include transferring certain key powers in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa to the federal government. Sources said constitutional provisions ranging from Articles 232 to 234 could be examined before any major decision is taken. Reports from national security institutions will also be reviewed during the meeting. The government is expected to consider additional measures and the possible exercise of further federal powers in view of the province’s security situation. However, any final decision will depend on the outcome of the consultations and the relevant constitutional process.
