Islamabad, 22 October, 2026 (Kamran Raja): Pakistan will seek a fresh Generalised System of Preferences Plus (GSP+) arrangement with the European Union from January 2027, following the expiry of the current framework in December 2026. However, under a two-year grace period, the existing arrangement will remain in effect until December 31, 2028, allowing time for the European Commission and the European Parliament to finalise the new scheme. According to official sources, Pakistan will need to intensify diplomatic lobbying and strengthen its capacity to meet strict compliance requirements to qualify for the next GSP+ arrangement. Countries, including current beneficiaries such as Pakistan, will be eligible to apply once the new GSP+ regulation comes into force on January 1, 2027. Pakistan will also need to address key priorities and ensure compliance with international commitments under the revised rules to maintain its eligibility for trade preferences. Meanwhile, European Union Ambassador Raimundas Karoblis met the leadership of the Pakistan Textile Council in Karachi to discuss GSP+ and future trade relations. During the meeting, the EU envoy emphasised the effective implementation of existing international commitments to ensure the continuation of GSP+ benefits. Earlier, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Senator Ishaq Dar highlighted the importance of the GSP+ scheme to Pakistan’s economic and trade relations with the European Union during a meeting with EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas on the sidelines of the 81st United Nations General Assembly on September 21. Dar underscored the importance Pakistan attaches to its partnership with the European Union, particularly in trade and economic cooperation, describing GSP+ as a key component of bilateral economic ties. He also appreciated the EU’s constructive engagement with Pakistan during recent regional developments and its recognition of the country’s efforts to promote de-escalation and dialogue.
