Baghdad, 15 October, 2026 (Nosheen): Pakistan and Iran are expected to hold fresh consultations on regional peace efforts on the sidelines of the 52nd session of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation’s (OIC) Council of Foreign Ministers in Baghdad on October 17–18, according to Iranian state news agency IRNA. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi is scheduled to visit Iraq on Saturday, while foreign ministers from Pakistan, Egypt and Turkiye are also expected to attend the meeting. Meanwhile, Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf has accused US President Donald Trump of making promises and subsequently breaking them, saying Washington must be held accountable and compelled to change its conduct. According to IRNA, Ghalibaf stressed that Iran must combine military action with negotiations to establish lasting deterrence and prevent future attacks. He questioned whether a signed agreement with the United States would guarantee that Washington would refrain from attacking Iran in the future. He also rejected the idea of relying solely on military confrontation, emphasizing that Iran must strengthen its defence capabilities and convert military achievements into political gains. Ghalibaf said Iran should become powerful enough to discourage the United States and other regional and international actors from pursuing hostile objectives against it. Separately, Iranian Army Deputy Chief for Coordination Rear Admiral Habibollah Sayyari said on Thursday that the Strait of Hormuz would remain closed and that any passage through the strategic waterway would require coordination with Iranian forces. Speaking to reporters at a ceremony honouring army nurses, Sayyari pointed to oil flows and rising gasoline prices in the United States as indicators of the situation surrounding the vital maritime route. The developments come amid heightened regional tensions and concerns over the security of international energy supplies.
