ISLAMABAD, 17 August, 2026 (KamranRaja) – Pakistan has assumed the Presidency of the United Nations Conference on Disarmament, marking another significant diplomatic milestone for the country. Foreign Office Spokesperson and Additional Foreign Secretary for Arms Control and International Security Tahir Andrabi will lead the Conference and chair key meetings in Geneva.
During its presidency, Pakistan will facilitate discussions on nuclear disarmament, prevention of nuclear war, outer-space security, the Fissile Material Cut-off Treaty (FMCT), emerging technologies and the military use of artificial intelligence. A key challenge will be bridging differences among major powers over the Prevention of an Arms Race in Outer Space (PAROS) and promoting consensus-based progress.
Pakistan’s presidency comes amid heightened global strategic tensions, including the Russia-Ukraine conflict, US-China rivalry, nuclear weapons modernization and growing military applications of AI and space technologies. The 65-member Conference on Disarmament is the world’s only permanent multilateral negotiating forum dedicated to disarmament and arms control, providing Pakistan an opportunity to play a constructive role in promoting global peace and strategic stability.
