ISLAMABAD, 12 September 2026 (Nosheen): The 61st martyrdom anniversary of Major Raja Aziz Bhatti Shaheed, a distinguished hero of the September 1965 war and recipient of Pakistan’s highest military gallantry award, Nishan-e-Haider, is being observed today. Born in Hong Kong on August 6, 1928, Major Aziz Bhatti joined the Pakistan Military Academy on January 21, 1948, and was honoured as the Best Cadet during the first regular course’s passing-out parade in 1950, where he also received the Sword of Honour and Norman Gold Medal. During the 1965 war, Major Aziz Bhatti displayed extraordinary courage while defending the Burki sector near Lahore, resisting relentless enemy attacks for five days and nights. Despite severe hardships, he remained steadfast at his post and continued engaging the enemy until he embraced martyrdom on September 12, 1965, after an enemy shell struck him while he was assessing enemy movements near the BRB Canal. In recognition of his supreme sacrifice and exceptional bravery, he was awarded the Nishan-e-Haider on March 23, 1966. The Pakistan Armed Forces paid rich tribute to Major Aziz Bhatti Shaheed, saying his courage, devotion to duty, leadership and supreme sacrifice remained an enduring inspiration for generations. President Asif Ali Zardari also paid tribute to the national hero, describing his sacrifice as a shining example of unwavering commitment to the defence of the motherland. The President said the nation would always remember the sacrifices of its martyrs, whose devotion and patriotism formed the foundation of Pakistan’s sovereignty and national security. On the occasion, floral wreaths will be laid at Major Aziz Bhatti Shaheed’s final resting place and prayers will be offered for the departed soul.
