ISSI and CMG Host International Seminar on China’s Global Governance Initiative (GGI): Pakistan Reaffirms Strong Support

Islamabad, 29 September 2025(Kamran Raja): The China-Pakistan Study Centre (CPSC) at the Institute of Strategic Studies Islamabad (ISSI), in collaboration with China Media Group (CMG), hosted an International Seminar on the “Global Governance Initiative (GGI): China’s Vision of a Just and Fair Order.”

In her remarks, Ms. Wang Lei, Country Head of CMG, described GGI as a continuation of China’s commitment to a just international order and a shared future for mankind. She underscored the vital role of media in enhancing communication, building mutual trust, and deepening China-Pakistan friendship.

Welcoming participants, Ambassador Sohail Mahmood, Director General ISSI, highlighted the significance of President Xi Jinping’s timely initiative announced at the SCO Plus meeting in Tianjin earlier this month. He said GGI—anchored in sovereign equality, international law, multilateralism, people-centered development, and practical results—complements China’s earlier global initiatives (GDI, GSI, and GCI) and reinforces the UN-centered multilateral system. He suggested creating new mechanisms, such as a “Friends of GGI,” to broaden international support and reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to working with China and the global community.

Maj. Gen. (R) Fazle Elahi Akbar, Chairman FSDS Bangladesh, in his keynote, hailed GGI as a beacon of hope in a conflict-ridden and unjust world. He emphasized its potential to address crises in the Middle East, including Gaza and Palestine, by promoting peace, justice, and humanitarian relief.

Ambassador Khalil Hashmi, Pakistan’s Ambassador to China, underlined GGI’s alignment with Pakistan’s long-standing support for multilateralism, UN reform, and fair representation of developing countries. He stressed that Pakistan-China cooperation is a model of solidarity in advancing global peace and development.

Other distinguished speakers, including Mr. Shakeel Ahmad Ramay (AIERD), Dr. Akbar Nasir Khan (FIA), Dr. Xue Lei (SIIS), Ambassador Moin-ul-Haque, Mr. Wang Shengjie (Chinese Embassy), and Ambassador Khalid Mahmood (Chairman BoG ISSI), echoed strong support for GGI, noting its potential to reshape international governance, promote fairness, and strengthen Global South representation.

Chief Guest Mr. Murtaza Solangi, Spokesperson to the President of Pakistan and former Federal Minister, underscored that GGI reaffirms the UN’s founding values and provides a comprehensive framework for development, security, and civilizational harmony. He linked GGI’s principles with Pakistan’s priorities in climate resilience, connectivity, and technology, and reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to translating its vision into practical outcomes.

Earlier, Dr. Talat Shabbir, Director CPSC, welcomed participants and described GGI as a forward-looking vision rooted in equality, multilateralism, and people-centered development.

The seminar brought together diplomats, scholars, practitioners, media representatives, and policymakers from Pakistan and China to deliberate on President Xi Jinping’s initiative announced on 1 September 2025 at the SCO Plus meeting in Tianjin, China.
