Israeli Drone Strike on Gaza’s Islamic University Kills Three, Injures Eight

GAZA, 26 October, 2026 (Kamran Raja): An Israeli drone strike on the Islamic University of Gaza killed three people and injured eight others, including students, on Sunday, according to hospital officials and university staff, as continued attacks further devastate the territory’s education sector. The strike took place while classes were underway at the university in Gaza City. Two university sources said the three people killed were members of the administrative staff, while students were among those wounded. Gaza’s Ministry of Education condemned the attack, warning that the international community’s silence over strikes targeting students and educational institutions could allow such incidents to continue. The ministry said the higher education sector in Gaza was on the brink of collapse, with approximately 95 per cent of educational buildings damaged during the war. It described the latest strike as part of a continuing pattern of attacks on educational institutions across the territory and said Israeli attacks over the preceding six days had also killed 10 students and teachers. Separately, Gaza’s Civil Defence agency reported that four more people were killed in incidents elsewhere in the territory on Sunday. The latest casualties add to the mounting death toll from the ongoing conflict, which has severely damaged civilian infrastructure, educational facilities and essential services throughout Gaza. Universities and schools have suffered extensive destruction, disrupting education for thousands of students and exposing teachers and other education workers to continuing violence. Asked to comment on the strike against the Islamic University, the Israeli military said it was examining the reports, according to media accounts. No further details about the circumstances of the attack or the military’s assessment were immediately available. The incident has renewed concerns over the safety of civilians and educational institutions in Gaza, where the education system has sustained extensive damage during the war.
