India Signs Deal with US to Purchase Javelin Anti-Tank Missile Systems

NEW DELHI, 28 August, 2026 (Ghufran): The Indian Army has signed an agreement with the United States to purchase Javelin anti-tank missile systems, the US Embassy in India announced on Friday. The financial value of the agreement was not disclosed. The medium-range guided missile system, jointly manufactured by Lockheed Martin and RTX, is designed to engage a range of targets, including armoured vehicles. The Javelin system is already in service with the US Army and Marine Corps, as well as with several international customers. US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor said the agreement would create new opportunities for the defence industries of India and the United States to expand cooperation. He said there was “tremendous potential” for future collaboration aimed at strengthening the defence industrial bases of both countries. The agreement comes after India and the United States signed a 10-year defence framework agreement in October. Despite a recent deterioration in bilateral relations over US tariffs on Indian goods, Washington’s criticism of New Delhi’s purchase of Russian oil and closer US engagement with Pakistan, defence cooperation between India and the United States has continued to remain largely unaffected. India did not immediately issue a comment on the latest agreement.
