Rawalpindi, 21 August 2026 (Ghufran): The government early Friday sent former prime minister and PTI founder Imran Khan back to Adiala Jail after he underwent a medical check-up at Shifa International Hospital in Islamabad. According to jail sources, Imran Khan was taken back to his cell under tight security following his medical examination. Earlier, he had been shifted from Adiala Jail to Shifa Hospital late Thursday night. Jail officials said Imran Khan was transferred to the hospital amid strict security arrangements, while large contingents of police were deployed outside the facility. Sources said arrangements had been finalized for the PTI founder’s medical treatment and examination, with a team of doctors constituted for the purpose. Earlier this week, the Supreme Court of Pakistan had directed the government to shift Imran Khan from jail to hospital. A three-member bench ordered that he be taken to Shifa Hospital in the federal capital within 48 hours. The government subsequently filed a review petition against the court’s order. However, the Supreme Court Registrar’s Office raised objections to the petition and returned it, stating that it had been submitted without the complete record. The review petition was filed by the Islamabad Chief Commissioner through the Islamabad Advocate General, seeking reconsideration of the Supreme Court’s August 18 interim order. The government had argued that the directive to transfer Imran Khan to hospital went beyond the court’s jurisdiction and required reconsideration. Reacting to the development, Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Political Affairs Rana Sanaullah Khan said the relief granted to the PTI founding chairman was not in accordance with the law. Meanwhile, Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) lawmaker Tariq Fazal Chaudhry said that Imran Khan could potentially be sent abroad.
