Islamabad, 01 May 2026(Kamran Raja): Federal Minister for Planning, Development and Special Initiatives, Ahsan Iqbal, addressed the Institute of Architects Pakistan Convention and Exhibition 2026 in Islamabad, emphasizing the vital role of architecture in shaping national identity and cultural legacy.
He stated that architecture is the true identity of any nation and civilization. “Empires may fade away, but iconic structures such as Alhambra, Cordoba, Badshahi Mosque, and the Taj Mahal continue to preserve their identity,” he remarked.
The minister highlighted that architecture serves as an eternal symbol of a nation’s character and plays a key role in keeping its identity alive. He noted that many cities around the world are recognized by their unique architectural styles.
Ahsan Iqbal stressed that architecture is not merely about constructing tall buildings but also about influencing lifestyles. “Modern buildings must prioritize accessibility, comfort, and human needs,” he said, adding that effective design and proper use of space enhance functionality and make life easier for people.
Describing architecture as “the poetry of construction,” he said it becomes the defining identity of cities and nations. He also acknowledged that Pakistan has neglected its historical heritage in recent years and emphasized the need to revive and preserve it.
Referring to Karachi, he said the city was once known for its distinctive yellow-stone architecture, a character that has now faded. He underscored the importance of promoting local culture and regional identity alongside modern trends.
The minister further highlighted the urgency of adopting environmentally friendly construction practices in light of climate change. He reiterated that providing dignified housing to every citizen is a fundamental responsibility of the government, which is why efforts are underway to promote mortgage financing.
He called on architects to play an active role in promoting low-cost housing and stressed that innovation in construction materials and design is the need of the hour. He concluded by emphasizing that collaboration between architects and construction companies can significantly improve construction standards in the country.
