Babar Azam Says Team Selection Is Not His Responsibility Ahead of Sri Lanka Test Series

Islamabad, 8 November, 2026 (Ghufran): Pakistan Test captain Babar Azam has expressed his determination to bring out the best in his players ahead of the upcoming two-match Test series against Sri Lanka, clarifying that final decisions regarding team selection rest with the selectors and coaching staff. Speaking at a pre-series press conference in Rawalpindi, Babar said his primary responsibility was to work with the available squad, prepare the players and ensure they delivered strong performances on the field. He explained that following Pakistan’s recent Test performances, the selectors and head coach had reviewed the team’s requirements and finalised the squad, adding that he had been entrusted with a group of 15 players. Babar said he would focus on making the most of the available resources rather than involving himself in matters beyond his responsibility. Pakistan have made several changes to their squad for the Sri Lanka series despite initially announcing a 14-member team on October 24, with top-order batter Abdullah Fazal among the notable omissions. The skipper clarified that he shared his views with the selectors and coaching staff whenever required, but the final selection decisions were their responsibility. He also acknowledged that Pakistan were virtually out of contention in the current World Test Championship cycle and were now focusing on preparations for the next edition by introducing new players. Babar said the team management was working to establish a suitable combination of experienced campaigners and emerging youngsters, giving the newcomers opportunities to demonstrate their abilities at the international level. He expressed confidence that the inclusion of fresh talent would bring renewed energy and a positive approach to the team. Reflecting on Pakistan’s recent setbacks, Babar said the players needed to learn from past performances and use those lessons to improve their approach in future matches. He emphasised that the team’s strategy remained positive and focused on moving forward. The 32-year-old captain further highlighted the importance of senior players in guiding younger teammates, particularly when dealing with pressure situations during international matches. According to Babar, victories in individual matches and series help build confidence, while the arrival of young players brings fresh enthusiasm and motivation to the dressing room. He added that the youngsters in the current squad had shown confidence and potential, while senior members of the team were committed to sharing their experience and helping them perform consistently. Babar expressed hope that the combination of experienced players and emerging talent would help Pakistan deliver an improved performance in the upcoming Test series against Sri Lanka.
