ISLAMABAD, 1 November, 2026 (Kamran Raja): The Punjab Legislative Assembly in India has unanimously approved a resolution urging the central government to reopen the Kartarpur Corridor without delay, allowing Sikh devotees to visit their revered religious site in Pakistan. The resolution, moved by Education Minister Harjot Singh Bains, received the backing of all lawmakers, while Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann also voiced strong support for the initiative. Through the resolution, the assembly called on New Delhi to restore access to the corridor and ensure that Sikh pilgrims can travel to Gurdwara Darbar Sahib in Kartarpur without unnecessary restrictions. Lawmakers highlighted the corridor’s significance as a symbol of religious harmony, cultural ties and shared heritage between communities on both sides of the border. They also stressed the need to simplify visa and travel procedures to facilitate pilgrims. India suspended operations at the corridor on May 7, 2025, following the Pahalgam incident. Political observers have expressed concern over the continued restrictions, arguing that the closure has affected the religious sentiments of the Sikh community and prevented devotees from accessing one of their most sacred sites. The unanimous resolution has renewed pressure on the Indian central government to reconsider its decision and restore pilgrimage access to Kartarpur.
