Iran Says US Response to Hormuz Reopening Proposal Is Insufficient

DUBAI, 12 October, 2026 (Nosheen): Iran has described the United States’ response to its seven conditions for reopening the strategic Strait of Hormuz as insufficient, saying key issues remain unresolved and negotiations have stalled. According to Iranian state media, Mohsen Rezaei, Secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, said Tehran had presented a proposal during the United Nations General Assembly under which the Strait of Hormuz could be reopened and normal maritime traffic restored within seven days if its conditions were met. The United States subsequently responded through Qatari intermediaries. Rezaei said Washington needed to clarify the points that remained unclear to Tehran, stressing that Iran would not reopen the waterway to the United States or engage in negotiations until its conditions were fulfilled. He added that the American response accepted some Iranian conditions, while others remained unclear, and said Tehran was no longer in the process of responding to Washington. The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment. In late September, Tehran said it had received a US response to its latest proposal aimed at reviving the collapsed ceasefire in the Gulf, days after US President Donald Trump said he had rejected the proposal. Qatar and other mediators have continued to relay messages between Washington and Tehran in an effort to end the conflict and restore passage through the Strait of Hormuz, a vital maritime route that carried around one-fifth of the world’s oil and liquefied natural gas before the conflict began in late February with US and Israeli attacks on Iran.
