Trump Appeals to US Supreme Court to Revive Lawsuit Against Hillary Clinton Over 2016 Election

WASHINGTON, 10 October, 2026 (Kamran Raja): US President Donald Trump has appealed to the Supreme Court to revive his dismissed lawsuit against former Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton, former FBI Director James Comey and others, accusing them of conspiring to undermine his 2016 election campaign by linking it to Russia. The lawsuit, filed in 2022, alleged that Clinton and her allies promoted a false narrative about collusion between Trump’s campaign and Russia. A federal judge dismissed the case and imposed nearly $1 million in sanctions against Trump and his lawyer, Alina Habba, describing the lawsuit as frivolous and intended to advance a political narrative. The Atlanta-based 11th US Circuit Court of Appeals upheld the dismissal and sanctions in 2025. Meanwhile, a 2019 investigation led by former special counsel Robert Mueller found that Russia had interfered extensively in the 2016 presidential election but did not establish that members of Trump’s campaign conspired or coordinated with the Russian government in its interference activities. Trump has repeatedly denied allegations of Russian interference and described them as a hoax. The former FBI Director Comey was also indicted by Trump’s Justice Department in a separate case, but a federal judge later dismissed the indictment, ruling that the prosecutor appointed to handle the case had been unlawfully appointed. Trump and his lawyers have argued that the lower courts’ decisions have had a profound impact on the presidency and the nation. The Supreme Court is now being asked to reconsider the dismissed lawsuit.
