Two Iranian Nationals Charged Over Alleged Plot Targeting Manchester Jewish Community

London, 3 October, 2026 (Nosheen): British authorities have charged two Iranian nationals with terrorism offences over an alleged plot targeting Manchester’s Jewish community on the eve of Yom Kippur, the holiest day in the Jewish calendar. Rahman Salehi, 35, and Salam Ahmadyan, 36, have been charged with preparing to commit or assisting another person to commit an act of terrorism. Counterterrorism police said the men allegedly attempted to obtain components and equipment to manufacture an improvised explosive device and carried out reconnaissance of potential targets. Police also said the suspects had allegedly been in contact with an overseas third party who may be based in Iran. British Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood said the alleged plot reflected wider security concerns involving suspected Iranian activity in Britain and said Jewish communities had been among the potential targets. Iran has denied accusations of involvement in such activities. The two men, who reportedly arrived in Britain by small boat from Europe several years ago, are due to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court in London. The Home Office said one had previously been granted asylum while the other had an active asylum claim. Counter Terrorism Policing said the alleged plot had caused concern within the Jewish community and the wider public, particularly during the High Holy Day period. Police said there was no connection between the Manchester case and a separate suspected plot involving RAF Fairford, a US-linked air base in Britain, over which a dual UK-Iranian national was arrested. British authorities have said they are investigating suspected Iranian involvement in that case, while Iran has denied any connection.
