KYIV, 8 September 2026 (Kamran Raja): Russia resumed airstrikes on the Ukrainian capital Kyiv early Tuesday, shortly after U.S. peace envoys Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff departed following a meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy, with Russian ballistic missile strikes injuring six people and damaging residential buildings, Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said. Klitschko said people were trapped inside a residential building and fires broke out in several parts of the city following the strikes. The Kyiv Military Administration said separately that falling debris damaged a five-storey apartment building and a three-storey residential block, while urging residents to seek shelter. As explosions were heard in Kyiv, neighbouring Poland activated military aviation operations to protect its airspace against the risk of a violation, according to the Polish armed forces. The attacks came after Kushner and Witkoff left Kyiv following their meeting with Zelenskiy, as the Trump administration renewed efforts to end Russia’s four-and-a-half-year war in Ukraine. The U.S. envoys had arrived after holding talks in Moscow, where the Kremlin said it did not rule out the possibility of resuming three-way negotiations. Meanwhile, in Russia, Ukrainian drones damaged civilian infrastructure and injured people in the Volga River city of Saratov, around 730 kilometres southeast of Moscow, according to the regional governor. Saratov is home to a large oil refinery operated by state-owned oil company Rosneft, along with several other industrial and military facilities. The latest attacks have added to tensions surrounding ongoing efforts to negotiate an end to the conflict.
