MONTERREY, 30 August, 2026 (Nosheen): France’s Diane Parry defeated Belgian second seed Elise Mertens 6-4, 0-6, 6-3 in the Monterrey Open final on Saturday to claim her maiden WTA singles title ahead of the U.S. Open. The 23-year-old Parry made a strong start at the WTA 500 event, racing to a 4-1 lead in the opening set. Mertens, 30, fought back to level the score, but Parry regained control, won the next game and broke Mertens to take the first set 6-4. Mertens responded emphatically in the second set, winning six consecutive games and breaking Parry three times to level the match. Parry took a medical timeout while trailing 5-0 but returned to continue the contest. The Frenchwoman regained her momentum in the deciding set and established a commanding 5-1 lead. Mertens attempted another comeback by winning two consecutive games, but Parry remained composed and served out the set 6-3 to secure her first Tour-level singles title after more than two and a half hours of play. The victory gives Parry a major confidence boost heading into the U.S. Open, where she is scheduled to face Switzerland’s Viktorija Golubic on Monday.
