MANILA, August 18, 2026 (Ghufran): A student livestreamed himself shooting a schoolmate dead before taking his own life at a high school in the Philippines on Tuesday, authorities said, in the country’s second school shooting in as many months. The incident took place at Ateneo de Zamboanga University, a Catholic private institution in western Mindanao.Regional police spokeswoman Shella Chang told AFP that the shooter went to the classroom of the victim, shot the student and then went to the fifth floor, where he shot himself. Interior Secretary Victor Remulla separately confirmed that the ninth-grade suspect had livestreamed the incident on social media. The alleged shooter’s Facebook account has since been disabled.A video circulated by local media showed the barrel of a gun moving down a hallway in a manner resembling a first-person shooter video game before being pointed into a classroom and fired.Children wearing school uniforms were then seen screaming and rushing toward an exit.Authorities said it was not immediately clear how many people were injured in the shooting.
The Interior Ministry said national police were working to establish the motive behind the attack, determine the ownership and source of the firearm used and find out how the weapon was brought inside the school campus.Police have yet to release the ages of the shooter or the victim.Ateneo de Zamboanga President Father Guillrey Andal confirmed the two fatalities and said the school was deeply saddened by the shooting and was cooperating with the investigation. Speaking to reporters outside the school, Andal said the administration was working with police to identify the victims so their loved ones could be informed. He acknowledged that the incident had caused deep concern and worry among students and staff. He said the school’s security team had been preparing a simulation exercise even before the incident because of the importance of safety for students and personnel.School shootings are rare in the Philippines, but three teenage students were killed and 20 others wounded in an attack at a school in the central Philippines in June.Following that tragedy, Ateneo de Zamboanga, like many other schools across the country, conducted an active-shooter drill last month.Legal gun ownership is tightly regulated in the Southeast Asian country, although a large black market for firearms continues to exist.
