ISLAMABAD, 11 August, 2026 (Kamran Raja): Barrister Salman Safdar, lawyer for Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf founder Imran Khan, has submitted written arguments in court in a case concerning the alleged solitary confinement of Imran Khan and his wife, Bushra Bibi. Barrister Salman Safdar described the report submitted by the Adiala Jail superintendent as contrary to the facts and misleading, and asked the court to appoint a judicial assistant, local commission or amicus curiae to independently assess the situation. The written arguments requested that the commission meet Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi, after which the court should seek its assessment report. The lawyer also requested that both prisoners be summoned before the court and their statements regarding the alleged solitary confinement be recorded. He said their statements could also be recorded through video link if necessary. Salman Safdar proposed forming a board comprising an expert, a state representative and representatives of the petitioners. According to him, the board should visit Central Jail Adiala, inspect the relevant facilities and records, and submit an independent report to the court regarding the prisoners’ isolation and their treatment.
The written arguments also sought video-link communication facilities for Imran Khan, similar to the facility provided for prisoners by the Punjab chief minister. The lawyer also requested that Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi be provided with books and television facilities. Salman Safdar said Imran Khan’s legal team is representing him in more than 300 cases, and therefore lawyers should be allowed to meet him without obstruction in accordance with jail rules. The written arguments further sought to ensure weekly meetings between prisoners and their family members and friends in accordance with jail regulations. The lawyer requested clear directions to the Adiala Jail superintendent to ensure that such meetings are facilitated without unnecessary restrictions or obstacles. The lawyer also requested the release of Imran Khan’s medical reports and complete medical record, and asked that the record also be submitted to the court. According to the written arguments, the Adiala Jail superintendent allegedly ignored court directions and submitted an incomplete report, which was only one and a half pages long and did not address the serious concerns and issues raised in the case. Salman Safdar maintained that the movement of Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi could not be described as unrestricted because both were not being allowed to leave their designated areas. The written arguments submitted by Barrister Salman Safdar comprise 19 pages. Justice Khadim Hussain Soomro had sought written arguments in the case.
