Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif Meets IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva on UNGA Sidelines

New York, 24 September 2025(Kamran Raja): Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif today met Ms. Kristalina Georgieva, Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), on the margins of the 80th Session of the United Nations General Assembly. The Prime Minister lauded the IMF’s longstanding and constructive partnership with Pakistan, which had further strengthened under Ms. Georgieva’s leadership. He acknowledged the IMF’s timely support through various instruments, including the USD 3 billion Stand-By Arrangement in FY 2024, followed by the USD 7 billion Extended Fund Facility (EFF) and the USD 1.4 billion Resilience and Sustainability Facility (RSF). The Prime Minister noted that with the implementation of deep-rooted structural reforms, Pakistan’s economy was showing positive signs of stabilization and moving towards recovery. He emphasized that IMF’s support had been instrumental in guiding the Government’s reform efforts.

Underscoring Pakistan’s steady progress towards meeting program targets and commitments, the Prime Minister stressed that the devastating impact of recent floods on Pakistan’s economy must be duly factored into the Fund’s review process. Ms. Georgieva expressed her sympathy for all those affected by the floods and highlighted the importance of damage assessment in shaping recovery priorities. She commended the Prime Minister’s commitment to sound macroeconomic policies and reiterated the IMF’s continued support for Pakistan’s efforts to implement necessary reforms for sustainable, long-term economic growth.
