United Nations, September 15, 2025(Kamran Raja): Pakistan has called on the United Nations Security Council to take urgent and united action to address the escalating conflict and humanitarian crisis in Yemen, warning that unchecked hostilities, arbitrary detentions, and worsening famine conditions threaten to push millions into despair and destabilize the wider Middle East. Speaking at the Security Council briefing on Yemen, Ambassador Usman Jadoon, Pakistan’s Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN, stressed that the plight of Yemen must be confronted with renewed diplomacy and collective resolve. He underlined that political paralysis, economic collapse, and a severe humanitarian crisis had created one of the world’s gravest situations, with millions displaced, infrastructure destroyed, and essential services crippled.
Ambassador Jadoon outlined four central concerns underpinning Pakistan’s position:
Escalating Violence: He expressed Pakistan’s deep concern over the cycle of violence between the Houthis and Israel, urging restraint, de-escalation, and the protection of civilians. “We condemn the ongoing attacks against civilians and civilian infrastructure, which cannot be justified under any pretext. Hostilities must end immediately,” he stressed.
Arbitrary Detentions: He strongly condemned the Houthis’ arbitrary detention of UN personnel and seizure of humanitarian property, calling it a blatant violation of international law and a direct assault on the UN’s ability to deliver aid. He demanded the immediate and unconditional release of all detained UN, NGO, humanitarian, civil society, and diplomatic personnel.
Humanitarian Collapse: Highlighting Yemen’s worsening humanitarian crisis, he noted that two-thirds of the population required urgent assistance. “Food insecurity is rising, malnutrition is widespread, and outbreaks of disease persist,” he warned, urging donors and humanitarian agencies to step up support before more lives are lost.
Path to Peace: Reaffirming diplomacy and inclusive dialogue as the only sustainable solution, he cited the December 2023 roadmap as a viable way forward and welcomed the efforts of the UN Special Envoy to sustain dialogue. He urged all parties to demonstrate political will and engage in meaningful negotiations.
Calling on the Security Council to fulfill its Charter responsibilities, Ambassador Jadoon emphasized: “The Council must facilitate and advance the peace process. It must speak with one voice to end the suffering of the Yemeni people, uphold the UN Charter, and chart a path toward peace, stability, and prosperity in Yemen and the wider Middle East.”
He reaffirmed Pakistan’s solidarity with Yemen and readiness to work with all Council members to forge a peaceful way forward. Concluding his remarks, he reminded the Council that Yemen’s agony must not be allowed to slip into permanence, warning that its fate would reflect either the resolve or failure of the international community.
