Islamabad – August 5, 2025(Ghufran): The National Disaster Management Authority’s (NDMA) National Emergencies Operation Center (NEOC) has issued a hydrological alert regarding the River Sutlej, warning of a rising trend in water discharge due to ongoing monsoon activity and upstream rainfall across the border. According to NEOC, active monsoon currents are penetrating the upper and central parts of Pakistan, while a westerly trough persists over the northern areas. As a result, heavy to very heavy rainfall is forecasted from August 5 to 7, 2025. This weather pattern is expected to significantly increase river flows, particularly in the River Sutlej. As of August 5, the water discharge in River Sutlej at the downstream point of Ferozepur (Ganda Singh Wala) has surged sharply—from 28,657 cusecs to 33,653 cusecs within an hour—signaling a rising trend. Although the river’s current level remains within normal limits, further increases are likely due to forecasted rainfall over the Sutlej and Beas catchments in Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir, Punjab, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh. Additional concerns stem from rising storage levels in Bhakra and Pong Dams, which are currently at 55% and 56% capacity, respectively. Any subsequent water releases from Pong Dam through its power station could elevate River Sutlej to low flood levels at Ganda Singh Wala during the week.
In light of the situation, NDMA strongly advises residents in flood-prone areas—especially those near canals, nullahs, and flood plains—to remain vigilant. People are urged to avoid unnecessary movement during adverse weather and to stay away from rising water bodies, which could present life-threatening conditions due to sudden surges.
Local authorities have been instructed to ensure full preparedness, including:
Activation of flood response teams
Pre-clearance of drainage systems
Monitoring of vulnerable zones for potential evacuation or rescue operations
Residents are advised to secure household items, livestock, and valuables to mitigate damage in case of inundation.
NDMA, through NEOC, is closely monitoring the evolving situation in coordination with provincial and district disaster management authorities. Citizens are encouraged to stay informed via official communication channels, media updates, and the Pak NDMA Disaster Alert mobile application, which provides real-time alerts and safety guidelines.
