Top-Order Batters Must Play Aggressively, Say Gul Feroza and Shawaal Zulfiqar

Lahore, 21 August 2026 (Nosheen): Pakistan women cricketers Gul Feroza and Shawaal Zulfiqar have emphasized the need for aggressive batting from the top order, saying modern cricket has become faster and the team is adapting accordingly. The Pakistan women’s cricket team is currently holding a training camp in Lahore as part of its preparations for the upcoming Women’s Asia Cup.Speaking during the camp, Gul Feroza and Shawaal Zulfiqar said the team was focusing on scenario-based matches, including games against male players, to improve its preparation and match awareness. They said scenario-based matches were more beneficial than net sessions alone because players could not fully experience field conditions while batting in the nets. Match practice, they added, provides players with a better understanding of different aspects and situations of the game. Gul Feroza said her individual performance had been improving, but the team needed to bring greater consistency to its overall performance. She acknowledged that the team had failed to perform according to expectations at the T20 World Cup, describing the outcome as disappointing.

She said the Women’s Asia Cup and Asian Games were important events on the horizon and the team’s objective was to perform at its best in both competitions.Meanwhile, Shawaal Zulfiqar said making a comeback after a series of injuries had not been easy. She said she had remained out of the team due to back-to-back injuries but worked hard to regain her form and perform well after returning. Shawaal described the injury period as challenging and said it required players to remain mentally strong and patient. She also highlighted the benefits of playing alongside male players, saying the experience was helping the team prepare for stronger and more competitive cricket.Shawaal further said the team’s confidence was growing under captain Fatima Sana. She noted that Fatima Sana had recently played in The Hundred and was sharing her experience with teammates, which was proving motivating for the other players as well.
