Doha, 29 October, 2026 (Ghufran): Qatari mediators have presented Iran with a new draft agreement aimed at ending the war involving the United States and Israel, but a senior Iranian official has described the proposals as unacceptable, according to officials familiar with the negotiations. An official briefed on the talks, who is not Iranian, said the new peace proposal for the eight-month-old conflict was presented on Sunday and was under consideration in Tehran, with a response expected by the end of the week. Qatar, alongside Pakistan, has been leading mediation efforts to end the conflict, which has disrupted global shipping and oil supplies and recently spread to Saudi Arabia and Yemen. The proposal reportedly sets out a seven-day timeline to address concerns raised by Tehran and Washington, with daily confidence-building measures expected from both sides. The timeline could begin early next week, while several countries would serve as guarantors of the agreement. However, a senior Iranian official involved in the negotiations said Qatar had presented only “unacceptable ideas” rather than a formal offer, adding that Tehran’s position on the nuclear issue remained unchanged. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi said Tehran remained in close contact with intermediaries to examine proposals that could facilitate the implementation of Iran’s own seven-day plan to end the war, which he said could be carried out in less than a week. Washington wants Iran’s decades-old nuclear programme included in negotiations from the outset, while Tehran insists that its conditions, including an end to the US blockade of Iranian ports and the lifting of sanctions on Iranian oil exports, must be met first. Iran continues to reject Western concerns that its nuclear programme is intended for military purposes.
