Putin, Trump and Xi May Hold Trilateral Meeting in China Next Month: Kremlin

MOSCOW, 19 October, 2026 (Ghufran): Russian President Vladimir Putin, US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping could hold a trilateral meeting on the sidelines of next month’s Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in China, the Kremlin said on Monday. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov confirmed that the possibility of such a meeting had been raised in discussions, following a report by The Wall Street Journal that Putin had proposed a summit with Trump and Xi to discuss ways to end the war in Ukraine. Peskov said that although all three leaders might attend the summit in China, no specific proposals or agreements had been put forward regarding the meeting, its agenda or its possible outcomes. Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha criticised the idea, arguing that a meeting between the leaders of Russia, China and the United States could encourage Putin to continue the war rather than help bring it to an end. Sybiha said a trilateral meeting involving Ukraine, the United States and Russia would be more likely to accelerate efforts to end the conflict. Meanwhile, Peskov said Washington was continuing its mediation efforts to resolve the war and that Moscow appreciated those initiatives. He stressed, however, that any final peace settlement would require the participation of Ukrainian representatives willing to take responsibility for an agreement. The latest discussions come as Russia and Ukraine remain deeply divided over the terms of a possible peace deal. The last US-mediated peace talks between the two sides took place in February, before the United States and Israel launched military operations against Iran. Although the possibility of a meeting involving Putin, Trump and Xi has emerged, the Kremlin has not announced any formal agreement or confirmed arrangements for such a summit.
